Artatama II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artatama II was a king of Mittani in the mid-14th century BC. Chr.

Artatama made in the middle of the 14th century BC BC the ruler of Mittani, Tušratta , contested the rule, whereby he was supported by Aššur-uballit I , the king of Assyria , and Šuppiluliuma I , the great king of the Hittites . This also received no help from the allied Egypt , so that Šuppiluliuma undertook an ultimately unsuccessful campaign against Mittani to overthrow Tušratta. A few years later Artatama succeeded and Tušratta died. The now great influence of the Assyrians in Mittani seems to have been the reason for the change of sides of the Hittites , who granted asylum to the legitimate heir to the throne Mittanis, Šattiwazza , and tried to enforce his claims in campaigns against Artatama. Artatama had a son named Šuttarna .
