Artemis (gun)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artemis is a Greek anti-aircraft gun .

development

In the 1970s, Greece developed its own air defense system called Artemis. The name of the Greek goddess of the hunt was not chosen without ulterior motives. The Greek army demanded a cannon for fixed defense, which despite everything had to be deployable quickly. The main task was to combat low-flying aircraft and helicopters . Although the Greek company Hellenic Arms Industry was in charge of the development of the gun, the company also relied on the know-how of other European developers. This is how the 30 mm automatic cannon was developed by Mauser . The mount is based on designs by KUKA . The fire control system was developed by Philips .

technology

Artemis is delivered as a twin flak on a double-axle spreading carriage. To fire, the axes are tightened so that the gun rests on a base plate. Additional supports give stability, especially on uneven terrain. A central command post supplies relevant target data for each gun in a battery. At night, an IR sensor is used to find the destination. Measures to increase combat value are currently taking place here. They should lead to the fact that each gun can operate independently and is suitable for all weather as a single gun. Each gun carries 500 rounds of ammunition in a loading frame. Be fired explosive incendiary armor-piercing bullets and tracer bullets.
