Anterior tibial artery

The arteria tibialis anterior ("anterior tibial artery ") - referred to in animals as the arteria tibialis cranialis - is an artery of the lower leg . Along with the posterior tibial artery ( arteria tibialis posterior ), it is one of the two main branches of the popliteal artery ( popliteal artery ).

The anterior tibial artery runs in the anterior lower leg muscles in the direction of the ankle and gives off several branches:

  • Arteria recurrens tibialis posterior
  • Arteria recurrens tibialis anterior
  • Rami musculares
  • Malleolar artery anterior medialis
  • Anterior lateral malleolar artery
  • Ramus circumflexus fibularis

From the bend of the ankle, the continuation of the artery is called the dorsal artery ( Arteria dorsalis pedis ), which takes over the main part of the blood supply to the foot.
