Posterior tibial artery
The posterior tibial artery (posterior tibial artery ) - known as the caudal artery in animals - is an artery on the lower leg . It is the direct continuation of the popliteal artery ( arteria poplitea ) after the exit of the weaker anterior tibial artery ( arteria tibialis anterior ).
The arteria tibialis posterior pulls into the calf muscles and in this towards the inner ankle . In its course, it releases several branches:
- The fibular artery pulls the fibula towards the ankle and takes part in the supply of the lower leg muscles .
- The medial malleolar artery forms a vascular network on the medial malleolus ( rete malleolare mediale ).
- The rami calcanei move to the heel bone and feed the vascular network there ( rete calcaneum ).
At the medial malleolus, the posterior tibial artery passes the tarsal tunnel and divides into its terminal branches, the lateral and medial plantar arteries .
