Tarsal tunnel
The tarsal tunnel , also known as the malleolar canal , is a bony and connective tissue- bound canal in the area of the inside of the ankle . It is formed by the inner surface of the ankle bone , the calcaneus and the medial malleolus and completed by the flexor retinaculum . The tendon of the tibialis posterior muscle , the tendon of the flexor digitorum longus muscle , the posterior tibial artery and its accompanying vein, the tibial nerve, pass through the tarsal tunnel from front to backand the tendon of the flexor hallucis longus muscle .
Narrowing of the tibial nerve in the tarsal tunnel can lead to a nerve compression syndrome known as tarsal tunnel syndrome .
