Medial plantar artery

Plantar arteries of man

The medial plantar artery ("inner plantar artery ") is an artery in the foot .

human

In humans, the medial plantar artery is the weaker of the two branches of the posterior tibial artery . It runs - together with the medial plantar nerve lying on the side - on the inside edge of the sole of the foot to the base of the toe. Its initial section is covered by the abductor hallucis muscle , from the level of the first cuneiform bone it lies between this muscle and the flexor hallucis brevis muscle . It supplies the skin and muscles on the inside of the foot.

On the first metatarsal bone , the medial plantar artery divides into a deep branch ( ramus profundus ) and a superficial branch ( ramus superficialis ). The deep branch participates in the deep arch of the soles of the foot ( arcus plantaris profundus ). The superficial branch pulls the tendon of the abductor hallucis muscle towards the big toe. Its behavior is very variable: it can branch out to the first three plantar metatarsal arteries , form an anastomosis with the plantar hallucis artery or replace it entirely, or form a superficial plantar arch with the lateral plantar artery . A superficial plantar arch occurs in about a quarter of individuals.

Comparative anatomy

In animals, the medial plantar artery is the stronger of the two branches of the Ramus caudal the artery vein . It feeds the superficial plantar artery system ( Arteriae digitales plantares communes ), its ramus profundus forms a tributary to the Arcus plantaris profundus and thus participates - albeit to a small extent - in the blood supply of the hind foot.
