History Stansted Hall

Stansted Hall, 2006

Stansted Hall, built in 1871, was given to the National Union of Spiritualists in Stansted by J. Arthur Findlay, a former Honorary President of the Union, and is administered by the Union as a College for the Advancement of Mental Science according to his wishes.

Mr. Findlay bought the property in 1923 after he left the business and in 1945 brought up the idea of a spiritualist college in Stansted. After personal contacts with three successive presidents of the Union, a will was drawn up and in 1954 the National Council accepted the legacy of Stansted Hall with a donation. This was later followed by a donation in the form of a supply to be used for furnishings and decoration, and in 1964, a year after his wife's death, Mr Findlay transferred the buildings, grounds and furnishings to the Union. Mr. Findlay died in July 1964.
