Arthur Useldinger

Arthur Useldinger (born July 8, 1904 in Esch an der Alzette ; † March 15, 1978 there ) was a Luxembourg politician (KPL) and resistance fighter against the Nazi occupation .

Life

Useldinger worked as a steelworker at Arbed . Since 1932 he was a member of the Communist Party of Luxembourg (KPL). In 1933 he founded the Society of Friends of the Soviet Union (after the war he was chairman of the Luxembourg-URSS Society ). From 1934 he was secretary of the Escher Freethinker Association and employee of the KP newspaper Volksstimme .

After the occupation of Luxembourg by German troops in 1940, he was part of the leadership of the communist resistance and was the editor of the illegal magazine Die Truth .

From 1945 until his death in 1978 Useldinger was a member of the Luxembourg parliament . From 1945 to 1949 and again from 1970 to 1978 he was mayor of Esch an der Alzette, the second largest city in the country. For many years he was a member of the Central Committee and the Politburo of the Central Committee of the KPL.

Arthur Useldinger had been married to Yvonne Useldinger since 1940 , a resistance fighter, Ravensbrück survivor and later chairwoman of the Union des Femmes Luxembourgeoises women's association .
