content

ARTIC is a monothematic magazine. The core of the content of every issue is a term, for example "orange", "own", "integrity", "voice", "quicksilver", "net" or "lazy", from which changing authors text and image contributions develop, usually as first releases. Both young voices and well-known authors such as Herta Müller, Durs Grünbein, Robert Menasse and Tim Ulrichs have their say.

shape

A separate layout concept is developed for each issue on the basis of a format of 290 × 190 mm (smaller than A4) that has not changed since the company was founded. Particular attention is paid to the envelope, the material of which is chosen with regard to the leitmotif. Examples are flywire, mopping cloths or PVC construction fences. The theme of the respective issue is dovetailed with the design. In addition, each issue contains one or two works by artists, which will be designed as original work in the booklet after printing. Different techniques such as frottage, perforation or collage are used, and materials such as beeswax, glass, wire or tapes are used. The elaborate specific design gives the magazine the character of a multiple.

Dissemination, exhibitions

The ARTIC project was first presented in bookstores, then several times at ART Cologne, Art Frankfurt or The Cologne Art Book Fair and other trade fairs. Since 2001 ARTIC has been shown in a solo exhibition in the Künstlerhaus Dortmund in 2012 and in a solo presentation in the series Querungen in the Württembergischer Kunstverein (Stuttgart) in 2014. ARTIC is represented in collections, in the archive of the Center for Artist Publications in the Museum Weserburg, Bremen, which ARTIC dedicated an exhibition to its 25th anniversary in 2018.
