Artifact

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Artifact is an online trading card game developed by the US company Valve Corporation in cooperation with Richard Garfield , creator of the trading card game Magic: The Gathering . It was released on November 28, 2018 for Linux , Microsoft Windows and macOS . Implementation for iOS and Android is planned for mid-2019. The world of the game comes from the Dota 2 universe. Based on Dota , the game takes place on three separate game boards, so-called lanes , each with a tower. The game can be won by:

  • The tower in two opposing lanes is destroyed
  • The so-called Ancient , which can be attacked after the tower is destroyed, is destroyed in one lane
  • The opponent's time limit expires

development

The game was developed from 2014. It was presented to the public at The International 2017 via a teaser trailer . Due to the popularity of Richard Garfield and the Valve Corporation, the game received great media attention internationally. The closed beta phase, in which only professional trading card players and members of the video game industry participated, began in early 2018. On November 19, 2018, a larger closed beta test was started, in which selected members of the community could also participate.

Since the game was released on November 28, 2018, the number of active players has steadily decreased. Attempts to stabilize the number of players through updates have not been successful since then. In early March 2019, several members of the Artifact team had to leave Valve, including senior developer Richard Garfield. On March 29, 2019, the development team announced that, due to the poor player response, they wanted to concentrate on the "bigger problems" from now on, instead of regularly releasing updates. The team expects these changes to the game will take a long time to complete.

reception

The game hit the top of the Steam sales charts on the day of release, with around 60,000 concurrent players.

The reviews for the game were mixed to positive. The depth and complexity of the game as well as the unique mechanics were praised.

There was criticism mainly because of the controversial payment model. In contrast to other online trading card games such as Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft or Gwent: The Witcher Card Game , it is not possible to expand your card collection just by playing the game. Instead, all cards must be purchased either by purchasing card packs or through the Steam Community Market for real money.

According to the gaming magazine GameStar , the game still had around 500 players at the beginning of 2019, the reviews of the game on Steam in March 2019 are largely in the "extremely negative" category.
