Artigas (Montevideo)

Artigas is a barrio of Montevideo , Uruguay that has now risen in Pocitos .

The 70,000 m² Montevidean district of Artigas, located in the northwest of Pocitos, was founded in 1884 by Francisco Piria . The demarcation was made by the engineer Aquiles Monzani. The neighborhood includes the streets named San Martín, Bolívar, Sucre, Lavallejas, Washington and Pública (Muchas Puertas) at the beginning of the 20th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Barrio Artigas was a neighborhood predominantly inhabited by workers and farmers. In the “Plano General del Pueblo de los Pocitos” Artigas was included in the Barrio Pocitos in 1888, as were the barrios Víctor Manuel , Fortuna and Caprera between the Arroyo Pocitos Grande and Arroyo Pocitos Chico .
