Artopia

The artist Free State of Artopia was founded in August 1979 as a side event to the 35th annual conference of the European Forum Alpbach in the Tyrolean town of Alpbach by André Heller , Gustav Peichl and the Graz actionist and video expert Horst Gebhard Haberl.

The name Artopia is a symbiosis of the word “Art” and “Utopia” - the name giver was Horst Gebhard Haberl.

According to André Heller, it should be a place to “shiver, to reflect, to implement longings” for all “desperate, euphoric, hopeless, vigilant”. The “Artist Free State”, which was originally designed for ten days, actually only existed for eight days.

The Austrian artist Fedo Ertl took part with the objects “Conserve Europe + Walking Boundary Stone”.

The Artopia emblem was the drawing of a hedgehog by the Austrian painter Johann Hauser .

The American rock musician Frank Zappa was commissioned by André Heller to compose the so-called Artopia national anthem "Artopia Hymn" (Artopia Kuckuck - Gloria!) And the signature for the daily television reports, the "Artopia Signation".

A cable television with a range of two kilometers was set up for this purpose. A white flag was hoisted and a newspaper called "Artopia Press" appeared every day.
