Arturo Vázquez Ayala (born June 26, 1949 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican football player who was usually used as a left defender .

Career

Vázquez Ayala played almost exclusively in his hometown during his career: initially for nine years (1970/71 to 1978/79) for the UNAM Pumas and then for five years (1980/81 to 1984/85) for the CF Atlante , where he also ended his active career. In between he only played one season (1979/80) outside the capital for Mexico's most popular football club Chivas Guadalajara , which is based in Mexico 's second largest city .

National team

Vázquez Ayala completed a total of 54 games for the Mexican national soccer team , in which he scored four goals. He made his debut in a friendly against Poland (1: 2) on August 8, 1973. He scored his first international goal in a friendly against Yugoslavia (5: 1) on February 1, 1977.

The highlight of his international playing career was his participation in the Football World Cup in 1978 , where he played all games in full as captain of his team. At this World Cup, he scored the first goal of group B in the 45th minute with a penalty for a 1-0 break lead against Tunisia. But in the end Mexico lost the game with 1: 3 and was bottom of the group with 2:12 goals and 0-6 points.
