history

In 1871, Cajetan Arzberger founded the Caj department store. Arzberger as a grocery store . The range was gradually expanded. Arzberger began producing gastric liqueur in 1883. In 1893 the company moved to one of the oldest buildings in Mariazell, where the company is still located today and which at that time also housed a guest house. The Arzberger family continued to run the hostel next to the department store and the liqueur manufacture until 1946. In 1994 Walter Arzberger and his wife Gabi took over the business. Since May 3, 2013 the Caj. Arzberger's successor, Arzberger GmbH & Co. KG, is entitled to use the Styrian coat of arms in business dealings .

Location

The department store and the liqueur factory have been located on the main square in Mariazell since 1893. The building is one of the oldest houses in town and was probably built around the time of Mariazell's market rise in the 14th century. The current building dates from the 17th century. The red marble portal (1642) and a shell (1635) as well as some historical furniture from the 18th century are still preserved.

Products

In the department store Caj. Arzberger offers fashion, food, perfume, laundry and household goods. The best-known products are the Mariazeller gastric liqueur (bitter and semi-sweet) and the Mariazeller herb bitters, which Arzberger produces in-house. They each consist of 33 different medicinal herbs and help with bloating, disorders in the digestive tract, loss of appetite and a bad stomach. The recipe for the stomach liqueur comes from Cajetan Arzberger from 1883 and has not been changed to this day. The range also includes Mariazeller liqueur pralines with a filling made from Mariazeller gastric liqueur, which are produced for Arzberger in the Viennese court sugar bakery Demel .
