Asa Lovejoy

Asa Lawrence Lovejoy (born March 14, 1808 in Groton , Massachusetts , † September 10, 1882 ) was an American politician.

Lovejoy attended Cambridge College and Amherst College . He studied law and was accepted into the bar. He then settled in 1843 in the part of Oregon Country that later became the Oregon Territory and practiced in Oregon City . In 1845 he was mayor of the city. From 1844 to 1848 he was a member of the provisional parliament. When this parliament was replaced by the parliament of the Oregon Territory, Lovejoy became the first chairman ( speaker ) of the House of Representatives in 1849 . In 1851 he was elected to the Oregon Territory Senate, and from 1854 to 1856 he was again a member of the House of Representatives.

At the Constituent Assembly of Oregon in 1857 he was a delegate.
