Asadullah Sarwari belonged to the Khalq wing of the Socialist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan . On April 1, 1979 he became chief of the AGSA secret police . Sarwari served as ambassador to Mongolia from 1980 to 1986. Sarwari's successor as Prime Minister was Sultan Ali Keschtmand .

According to Amnesty International, Sarwari, who has been in custody in Afghanistan since 1992 , was sentenced to death on February 23, 2006 for war crimes and torture committed during the rule of the Soviet-backed Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (1978–1992). International observers rate the process as inadequate, as essential legal norms and fundamental rights are said to have been disregarded, so Sarwari had no legal counsel for long stretches of the process.
