Ash Shirqat ( Arabic الشرقاط) is an Iraqi town and administrative center of the district of the same name in the Salah ad-Din governorate . The majority of the population is Sunni . Ash-Shirqat is about 100 kilometers north-northwest (NNW) of Tikrit on the left bank of the Tigris . South of the city are the ruins of Aššur , one of the most important cities of ancient Assyria.
In 2014 the place came under the control of the terrorist organization Islamic State . On September 22, 2016, Iraq was able to fully recapture the city.
