Cricket World Cup 1996

The Asgiriya Stadium is a cricket stadium in Pallekele, Kandy , Sri Lanka . It is owned by a secondary school, Trinity College in Kandy .

Capacity and infrastructure

The stadium has a capacity of 10,300 seats. The two wicket ends are the Hunnasgiriya End and the Hanthana End . It is located in the hills of the city and was obtained from one of them by leveling it as a flat surface.

International cricket

The first test match at this stadium took place in April 1983 between Sri Lanka and Australia , making it Sri Lanka's second test stadium. Since then it has been the venue for numerous international encounters. The first One-Day International in the Iqbal Stadium was held in March 1986 between Sri Lanka and Pakistan . At the 1996 Cricket World Cup , a preliminary round match was played in the stadium. After the construction of the Muttiah Muralitharan International Cricket Stadium in Pellekelle in 2009, no further international matches were played in the stadium.
