Ashima

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ashima ( Chinese  阿詩瑪  /  阿诗玛 , Pinyin Āshīmǎ ) is an epic of the Sani , a branch of the ethnic group of the Yi nationality (Lolo) in Yunnan in the People's Republic of China .

The beautiful girl Ashima ( 阿诗玛 ) is kidnapped by the son of a landowner and forced to marry. Ahei ( 阿 黑 ), her beloved, rushes to her rescue with his magical bows and arrows. He vies with the kidnapper in singing for three days and nights until he finally wins. On the way back, Ashima drowns in a flood. It transforms into the now famous Ashima rock in the stone forest in Shilin der Yi Autonomous County . Ashima is considered the protector of the medics . (According to the web links, there appear to be multiple versions of the story.)

The story was recorded late. It was translated from the language of the Sani ( 撒尼 语 ) into Chinese and also into Western languages, for example in 1980 by Gladys Yang into English.

It was mentioned as early as the end of the 19th century by the French Catholic missionary Paul Vial ( 保 禄 · ( ) (1855-1917).

The epic is on the intangible cultural heritage list of the People's Republic of China .
