The Shilin Autonomous County of the Yi ( Chinese  石林彝 族 自治县 , Pinyin Shílín Yízú zìzhìxiàn ) is located southeast of the city center of Kunming , the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan . Administratively, Shilin is part of the prefecture-level city of Kunming.

Shilin has an area of 1,777 km² and about 256,000 inhabitants (2014). About 35% of the population are members of ethnic minorities in China, mainly of the Yi nationality.

Administrative structure

At the community level, Shilin is made up of a street district , three large communities and one community . These are:

  • Lufu street district (鹿 阜 街道), seat of the county government;
  • Greater community Changhu (长湖镇);
  • Greater community Guishan (圭山镇);
  • Greater community Xijiekou (西街口镇);
  • Dake parish (大 可 乡).

Photovoltaics

At the end of 2008, the Kunming-based company Yunnan Tianda Photovoltaic Co, Ltd. started construction of the largest photovoltaic power plant in Asia. A power plant with an output of 166 MW is to be built on an area of 173 ha. Once the first phase has been completed, 10 MW of electricity will be fed into the grid by the end of 2009.

Attractions

Shílín (石林), in English "stone forest", is an impressive karst landscape about 120 km southeast of Kunming . The sculptures, up to 30 meters high, were washed out of the stone over time. Part of the stone forest has been prepared for tourists in several separate parks with paths for which an entrance fee is required.

The stone forest, along with other southern Chinese karst landscapes, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 2007 under the umbrella term " Karst landscapes in southern China " . The UNESCO justifies this with two criteria: First, the karst landscapes of China have outstanding aesthetic qualities with largely intact vegetation and, second, the karst landscapes testify to the complex evolutionary geological development of the area over 270 million years ago.
