Askerton Castle was built around 1300 in the village of the same name. Originally the castle was a dirt mansion, but at the end of the 15th century, William Dacre, 3rd Baron Dacre , had two crenellated towers built at either end of the mansion, presumably with the aim of adding more living space to his property than for defense reasons . A third tower could have been built on the northwest corner of the house, this time for defense, but it no longer exists today. In the 1850s, the castle was renovated by architect Anthony Salvin .

Askerton Castle is listed by English Heritage as a Grade I Historic Building.
