Askesian Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Askesian Society was a community of scientifically minded people and was founded in 1796 in London by William Allen (1770-1843). The establishment served to fill a void in intellectual London created by the discontinuation of Bryan Higgins' chemistry lectures . The founding members also included Richard Phillips , William Phillips and William Haseldine Pepys II (1775-1856). Guy's Hospital doctors such as William Babington and Astley Paston Cooper were also involved . Allen's laboratory in Plow Court (he had taken over a pharmacy and pharmaceutical factory there) served the group for their scientific experiments.

Members were required to pay a fee or submit a paper. With this in mind, Luke Howard gave a lecture entitled On The Modification of Clouds in December 1802 . In this work he presented for the first time the classification of clouds into " stratus ", " nimbus ", " cumulus " and " cirrus ", which is still used today . The society also held regular meetings in which members were treated with laughing gas to make them generally amused .

The company dissolved in 1807.
