Sir Astley Paston Cooper, 1st Baronet (born August 23, 1768 in Brooke (Brooke Hall) near Norwich / Norfolk , † February 12, 1841 in London ) was an English anatomist, surgeon and personal physician to several kings of the United Kingdom.

Life

He went to medical school at Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospital in London, where he was a student of surgeon Henry Cline (1750-1824), then to Edinburgh University in 1787 , became a prosector and then assistant professor of anatomy and surgery at St. Thomas Hospital and later a surgeon at Guy's Hospital. In 1813 he was appointed professor of anatomy by the Royal College of Surgeons . In 1792 he went to Paris, then became the personal surgeon of King George IV and in 1837 the personal physician of Queen Victoria . Cooper was notable for the audacity of his operations; he first ventured the operation of the artery tumor of the carotid artery and tied in a main artery tumor of the abdomen , the abdominal aorta near the heart. The Cooper scissors are named after him.

He was awarded the Copley Medal in 1802 . In 1826 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1833 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

In 1821 he was given the hereditary title of baronet , of Gadebridge in the County of Hertford. Since he had no children, the bestowal took place with a special inheritance regulation in favor of his nephew Astley Paston Cooper (1798–1866), who finally inherited him in 1841 as 2nd baronet.
