Aspalis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aspalis is a figure from Greek mythology , and has been passed down there as the daughter of Argaios, a highly respected inhabitant of Melitaia in Thessaly , sister of Astygites and servant of the virgin goddess Artemis .

When she learned that the tyrant of the city, called " Tartaros " by the citizens of Melitaia because of his sinister character, was planning to kidnap her and rape her before her wedding, as he had done with many other beautiful virgins, she hanged herself, to avoid this fate.

After her brother had avenged her by slipping into her clothes, entering the ruler's chambers and killing him, she was to be buried with full honors. However, her corpse was nowhere to be found, wherever one looked for it, as it had been raptured by divine will. Instead, a wooden picture of Aspalis was found next to that of Artemis, called Aspalis Ameilete Hekaerge by the locals . From this point on, virgins hung up a billy goat there every year that had not yet jumped because Aspalis was still a virgin.
