The Assab volcanic field is located on the southern tip of Eritrea , a few kilometers from the Red Sea coast.
A chain of basaltic cinder cones , the highest peak of which is 987 meters high, extends far to the east from the outskirts of the port city of Assab . The associated lava field covers an area of 55 × 90 kilometers, lava flows reached the seashore near the city in various places.
