Assay tone

Assay tone was an English unit of mass for precious metals and ores containing precious metals in England and North America . The measure was added to the sample weights in analytical chemistry . It was used for the quantitative determination of miner's and smelter's products. Precious metals were not weighed according to the Avoir-Dupois system , but according to the Troy system , with which the fineness was measured.
