Asser Levy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Asser Levy (* probably in Vilnius ; † February 1, 1682 ) was one of the first Jewish settlers in the Dutch colony of Nieuw Nederland , and thus one of the first Jews in America. He lived in the colony from 1654 until his death. He was the first documented Jew who achieved a high social position on the territory of today's USA .

With his own house in Nieuw Amsterdam (now New York City ), he was the first Jew to own land there and the first Jewish juror in North America.

Before Asser Levy left for America, he lived for some time, first in Schwelm , then in Amsterdam . On July 28, 1660, he signed a mortgage in Nieuw Amsterdam with the name Asser Levy van Swellem (the spelling "van Schwelm" can be found in a family tree), which could indicate the connection to the city of Schwelm.
