Association for Women in Science

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association for Women in Science (AWIS, German Association for Women in Science ) was founded in 1971 at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB, German Association of American Associations for Experimental Biology ). The organization aims to combat discrimination in the workplace, lower wages and professional isolation. The issues that the association is mainly concerned with are fair pay, the loss of workers, the balance between work and professional life and professional development.

history

AWIS was formed at the FASEB's annual convention in 1971, following a series of brunches organized by an informal women's committee. After the establishment of a managing director and an office in Washington, DC , cross-national local chapters were organized for the individual members. The founding chairmen were Neena Schwartz and Judith Pool . Early AWIS action involved initiating a class action lawsuit with other associations of women in science against the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in response to poor representation of women on the NIH Committee on Education Promotion. The lawsuit was dropped after group representatives, including Schwartz, met with NIH board member Robert Marsten . Marsten asked for recommendations and pledged to appoint more women. An early project was the establishment of the AWIS Educational Foundation (today known as Educational Awards, German AWIS Pedagogical Foundation) for donations and the award of memberships. In 1997 AWIS won the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics & Engineering Mentoring.

AWIS activities include public advocacy, news and media distribution, and educational programs such as mentorship programs and scholarships. AWIS publishes a variety of materials to inform women about scientific programs and women's issues, including the quarterly AWIS Magazine and AWIS in Action! Newsletter.
