Asterism
The character ⁂ is a rarely used punctuation mark consisting of three asterisks arranged in a triangle. In the German version of Microsoft Windows (Vista, as of July 2012) the system application "Character table" shows the name asterisk group ; otherwise a German name for the sign is not known. The (English) Unicode name is Asterism for asterism . Unicode contains ⁂ at code point U + 2042.
The symbol is used to mark a sub-chapter in a text. Because of its rarity, three consecutive asterisks (***) are often used instead of this character. The markup language HTML instead uses the hash sign (#) as a jump label for anchor .
⁂ should not be confused with the symbol ∴ (three dots in the same order) used in mathematical proofs , which is used to indicate a logical consequence .
In the Album für die Jugend , Opus 68, by Robert Schumann , this symbol can be found above tracks Nos. 21, 26 and 30 instead of a title.
