from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Asukai Masatsune ( Japanese 飛鳥 井 雅 経 ; * 1170 ; † April 5, 1221 ), also called Fujiwara no Masatsune ( 藤原 雅 経 ), was a Japanese waka poet.

He was the second eldest son of Nanba Yoritsune (Fujiwara no Yoritsune) and a daughter of Minamoto no Akimasa . He was considered an excellent Kemari player. His father was in opposition to the Kamakura shogunate and was exiled, while he himself was kindly received by the shogun Minamoto no Yoriie , as this was a friend of the Kemari game. Masatsune was the page of Tennō Go-Toba , held the "third following court rank " and was "Councilor of State" ( 参議 , sangi ) at the imperial court.

Fujiwara no Masatsune worked on the compilation of the imperial poetry collection Shinkokin-wakashū and on the waka collection Sengohyakuban utaawase , which appeared in 1201. He was the founder of the Asukai family, known for their poets, calligraphers, and Kemari players.
