Ascendant (Linguistics)
The ascendant is a method of describing the direction of an analysis of hierarchical systems such as language systems. The ascendant procedure works from the bottom up, from simple structures to complex structures and from subordinate classes to the higher-level element classes.
The counterpart is the descendant .
