The Athabasca Falls are 23 meter high waterfalls in the Athabasca River in Jasper National Park in Alberta , Canada near the Icefields Parkway (Highway 93). They are about 30 kilometers south of Jasper .
The water has dug through a layer of hard quartzite and the underlying limestone , creating a narrow, short gorge and some potholes. The falls are not known because of their height, but because of the force with which the water flows over the two-part fall. The Athabasca River usually carries between 100 and 200 m³ / s, which then plunge through the crevices, which are only about 30 meters wide. The largest estimated amount of water that the fall led was around 500 m³ / s.
