The Athenaeum Theater is a theater building in the Scottish city of Glasgow . After being converted, it is no longer used as such today. The theater complex consists of two individual buildings that were separately included in the Scottish monument lists in 1966 in the highest monument category A.

history

With the establishment of The Glasgow Athenaeum School of Music , the building was built as a theater school and expanded just three years later. In the 1930s the building turned out to be too small. That is why the neighboring Glasgow Liberal Club was bought as an extension. After larger premises were needed again in 1984, the decision was made to build a new building for today's Royal Conservatoire of Scotland , which was officially opened in 1988.

The older part of the theater building is located on the former St George's Place , now Nelson Mandela Place . It was built between 1886 and 1890. The extension along Buchanan Street was built between 1891 and 1893. As the architect, John James Burnet provided the designs for both structures. In 1932 a fire devastated parts of the interior of the older building. Alexander Buchanan Campbell was responsible for a revision and expansion in the 1960s . Around 2007 the building was converted into a commercial building. Various elements of the interior were lost in the course of the renovation work.
