The Atherton Islands consist of two small islands in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They are 3 km west-northwest of Bell Point on King George Island .
They were mapped and named between 1934 and 1935 by participants in the British Discovery Investigations . It is named after Noel Atherton (1899–1987), then a cartographer in the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office and later head hydrograph of this institution between 1951 and 1952.
