Athletic triad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In sports medicine, the athletic triad describes the unholy triumvirate of eating disorders such as anorexia , missing periods ( amenorrhea ) and osteoporosis .

This particularly affects female athletes from aesthetic sports such as floor exercise , ballet or endurance disciplines such as long-distance running . Originally, high-performance female athletes were affected by this, but the triad is also increasingly evident in popular sport with serious effects. The athletes starve themselves down to a weight ( anorexia athletica ) in which the fat content is so low that regular menstruation is disturbed or does not occur at all. Due to the low fat content, too little estrogen is produced, so that the bones become rotten at a young age ( osteoporosis ).

The therapy usually consists of an interdisciplinary collaboration between a psychotherapist , nutritionist and doctor .

Preventive measures consist of a balanced, varied and above all calorie-sufficient diet , a realistic target weight and the avoidance of laxatives or laxative maneuvers of any kind.
