The Atlántida Argentina is a coherent chain of seaside resorts on the Argentine Atlantic coast , near the mouth of the Río de la Plata in the province of Buenos Aires . They are all within the municipality (Partido) Partido de la Costa .

The area has a total of 57,345 permanent residents and around 500,000 tourists visit it every year. There are noteworthy green spaces near the coast in the entire area only around Cape San Antonio between San Clemente de Tuyú and Las Toninas.

The following places are in the region (from north to south, population figures according to the 2001 census by the INDEC ):

The bathing resorts benefit above all from the relative proximity (approx. 250 km) to the state capital Buenos Aires , from where the majority of bathers come.

In a broader sense, the name Atlántida Argentina is used in addition to the area described for the seaside resorts of Pinamar (20,592 inhabitants), Villa Gesell (23,257 inhabitants) as well as Mar del Plata and its suburbs (541,733 inhabitants) and Miramar (24,517 inhabitants) , so for the most densely built-up part of the Atlantic coast.

What all areas have in common is very high population growth and strong construction activity. Empty spaces between the different villages are quickly filled and new holiday colonies are created, which is favored by the existence of a continuous coastal road, the Ruta Provincial 11 .

This upswing in the region is accompanied by increasing ecological problems; In addition to the consumption of the landscape, there is above all, in some cases severe pollution of the water. As early as 1994, an investigation showed that the limit values for bacteriological contamination (mainly due to sewage) in some places were so far exceeded that a bathing ban should have been issued (source: Revista Nueva ).
