The Club Atlético Potosino is a former Mexican football club from the city of San Luis Potosi in Mexico .

history

The club was founded in 1972 under the name Pumas de la Universidad de San Luis and received a starting place in the then third-class Tercera División . Already in the first season 1972/73 he was promoted to the Segunda División .

Although the club was actually only founded to form the substructure for the local neighbor Club San Luis , which was playing in the top division of Mexican club football at the time, events in the 1973/74 season developed in an unexpected way: During the club San Luis finished the season with only 21 points in the last place in the table and relegated to the second division , the Club Atlético Potosino reached the semi-finals of the second division in the fight for promotion to the Primera División . Because the FMF , the Mexican Football Association, wanted to add two teams to the first division from the coming 1974/75 season, the two semi-finalists who had failed due to sporting reasons were invited to play in the first division. So the two clubs from San Luis Potosi swapped places.

Two years later Club San Luis managed to return to the upper house of football and so in the 1976/77 season there was the only city derby between two clubs from San Luis Potosi. Although Club San Luis retained the upper hand in the direct duels (1: 1 and 2: 0), they should end the season as a loser. The fact that Atlético Potosino finished the season in sixth place in the overall table before Club San Luis, which had occupied ninth place, was less significant. Because this would have been enough for both clubs to stay in the league. Much worse hit the fan base of Club San Luis that its presidium sold the first division license for the coming season to the CD Tampico .

Atlético Potosino was able to improve two years later when the best placement in the club's history was achieved with fifth place in the 1978/79 season. Although the club should move more often in the lower table regions in the coming years, relegation only overtook him after 15 years of membership in the first division at the end of the 1988/89 season. So it was reserved for Club San Luis in the summer of 2002 to bring top division football back to the city.
