The Los Atlixcos shield volcano is also known as Cerro el Abra and is located in the Mexican volcanic belt, a chain of volcanoes along the Gulf of Mexico , about 80 kilometers northwest of Veracruz . The summit of the volcano is formed by two pyroclastic cones and several lava fields, which are arranged in a line from east to west about two kilometers apart. The basaltic lava flows in the north and east reached the coast in places.
