Atom Heart Mother is the title of a six-part suite by the British band Pink Floyd . It appeared on the album of the same name in 1970 , on which it occupies the entire first page of the record. At 23:43 minutes it is the longest, uncut composition of the band. (Only the song Shine On You Crazy Diamond is longer, but was split into two parts prior to release, which frame the album Wish You Were Here .) The song was composed by all four band members and Ron Geesin .

Father's Shout (0: 00-2: 54)

The song begins with a low Hammond organ sound . Then the winds kick in, creating a dramatic effect through a chromatic melody.

The drums kick in at 1:22 .

The following part can be called the main topic. In the end the music becomes calmer. In between you can hear the noises of a carriage and a motorcycle.

Breast Milky (2: 55-5: 26)

In Breast Milky , a cello is added, which is accompanied by bass and organ. At 3:27 the drums are also added. This is followed by a solo performed by David Gilmour on the slide guitar .

Mother Fore (5: 27-10: 12)

This part begins with soft tones from Roger Waters' bass and Richard Wright's organ, accompanied by a choir that gets louder and louder. At 8:51 am Nick Mason's drums join in.

Funky Dung (10: 13-15: 29)

Funky Dung is strongly influenced by funk . The band plays in the background while David Gilmour plays a second guitar solo. At 1:00 p.m. the choir starts again, this time singing incoherent syllables. (... Ua, sicopa, mi, tucafi, sasasasasa, fsss, rrroti, rapatika, uopocha, rapatika ...) Then the music returns to the main theme from Father's Shout .

Mind Your Throats, Please (15: 30-19: 13)

This part starts with noises . Later, the instruments that play different parts of the piece will be faded in and out individually . This creates a feeling of "disorder". Shortly before the end of the part, a distorted voice can be heard shouting "Silence In The Studio!" The instruments then seem to "come back into order" and they all play a recapitulation of the main theme at a constant volume.

Remergence (19: 14-23: 43)

Remergence begins with the end of the main theme that started in Mind Your Throats, Please . This is followed by a recapitulation of the cello solo. Later one hears a solo that is reminiscent of the slide solo from Breast Milky , played with two guitars. At the end, all instruments and the choir play the main theme from Father's Shout one last time until everyone ends on the last note of the piece.

Working title

The piece had a number of working titles during its production. The main theme was referred to as Theme From an Imaginary Western by David Gilmour . The first working title for the entire piece was Epic (epic, tremendous). This title was also used as the heading on Ron Geesin's original score. Later the title was The Amazing Pudding (The Incredible Dessert). In 1970 the final title was set. Bassist Roger Waters suggested to the person in charge, John Peel , to look for a suitable title in a newspaper. He found an article in the Evening Standard dated July 16, 1970 about a pregnant woman who was about to be fitted with a pacemaker powered by an atomic battery . The title of the article was Atom Heart Mother .
