The Atomium in Brussels

Atomic style (French style atome, nl. Atoomstijl) is an art style that is used in comics and illustration . The term was introduced by Joost Swarte in the late 1970s and was named after the Atomium, which was built in Brussels in 1957/1958 .

Characteristics of the style are the reference to the classic Franco-Belgian comic the Ligne claire and the École Marcinelle with style borrowings from the modernism of the 1950s . Atomic style illustrations have a strong affinity for design and deliberately flaunt architecture, clothing, vehicles and interiors. Features are noticeable use and contrasts of color, sometimes ironic stylization and the playful use of it, up to and including ridiculousness.
