Joost Swarte (born December 24, 1947 in Heemstede ) is a Dutch illustrator, comic artist and designer. In 1976 he introduced the term Ligne claire for the drawing style Hergés and is one of the representatives of the atomic style with his colored, clearly contoured drawings .

Life

Joost Swarte studied industrial design in Eindhoven , he began drawing comics in the late 1960s, linking American underground comics, European art movements such as Bauhaus , De Stijl and Art Deco with his role model Hergé . His graphic work is small, as he was also successful in other areas. So he published the magazine Modern Papier , which later became part of the comic magazine Tante Leny Presenteert .

He not only created comic series such as Katoen en Pinbal , Jopo de Pojo , Anton Makassar , Dr Ben Cine and Niet Zo, Maar Zo , but also illustrations, posters, record and magazine covers for Vrij Nederland , the Belgian magazine Humo and the Italian architecture magazine Abitare . After taking part in the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême in 1980, his comics also gained international attention and were translated into English, French, Spanish, Italian and German. The work overview Swarte, Hors Serie was published in 1984 by Futuropolis . He worked for the American magazine RAW and drew covers for The New Yorker . Swarte was one of the initiators of the Dutch comic festival Stripdagen Haarlem. In 1992 he founded the comic publisher Oog & Blik with Hansje Joustra .

As a designer, Swarte mainly developed furniture, he also worked on glass windows and wall paintings. In Haarlem he designed the De Toneelschuur theater building together with the Mecanoo architects . He also designed the Hergé Museum, which opened in Louvain-la-Neuve in 2009 .
