Atsumu Ōmura

Atsumu Ōmura ( Japanese 大村 纂 , Ōmura Atsumu ; * 1942 in Bunkyō , Tokyo ) is a Japanese climatologist known for his discovery and contributions to the theory of global eclipsing .

Omura was in 1942 in what is now the municipality Bunkyō in Tokyo born. In 1965 he graduated from the University of Tokyo with a bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) and received a master's (M.Sc.) from McGill University in 1969 . He later received his doctorate from the ETH Zurich .

Ōmura is a professor emeritus at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (IACETH) at ETH Zurich, where he headed the institute's climate research group. In 1999 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea .

The main areas of interest of the working group include the planetary boundary layer and the cryosphere as well as their interaction with the atmosphere and the oceans. The group maintains a global circulation model. Ōmura also initiated the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN).

He retired in 2007.
