Atta vollweideri , also known as grass cutter ant, is a species of ant of the genus Atta thatis widespreadin South America .
distribution
The distribution area extends across South America in an axis from Peru to Uruguay .
description
Atta vollweideri is a reddish-brown species of ant. Their mandibles are greatly enlarged for the purpose of protecting their nests and cutting grass. The size of the individuals varies, depending on the box, from 1.5 to 25 millimeters. The workers do not have a poison sting.
behavior
The species normally grows its mushrooms on grass instead of leaves , as is the case with Atta . The colony size is up to five million members. For the purpose of heat control, Atta vollweideri create chambers below their nests, into which they throw plant waste and dead nest mates. They use the heat generated by rotting to heat their nests.
Systematics
The species belongs to the fungus-growing genus Atta , which in turn belongs to the subfamily of knot ants .
