history

The "Sea 1000" procurement project is the most expensive arms procurement project in Australia . The first budgets were approved in May 2012. In the first few years it was about the definition of the technical requirements, which led to a tender in which four manufacturers / nations participated. In addition to the winning design of the Naval Group (DCNS at the time), Sweden and Japan competed, the latter with the Sōryū class , and the fourth competitor was the submarine class 214 from Germany. On May 26, 2016, the selection of the Shortfin Barracuda was announced by the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull .

The development contract for the first development phase was signed on March 5, 2019.

technology

The boats are a conventionally powered variant of the French Suffren class , the so-called Shortfin Barracuda class of the Naval Group .
