The Sōryū class ( Japanese そ う り ゅ う 型 , Sōryū-gata ), also known as the 16SS class , is a class of submarines of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF) with self-contained propulsion (AIP) and replaced the U- Harushio class boats . She is the second class with that name in a Japanese Navy. It was named after an aircraft carrier class from 1935 .

While the first ten boats were still equipped with classic lead batteries, the Ōryū was the first Japanese submarine to receive lithium-ion batteries in NCA technology.
