The Harushio class ( Japanese は る し お 型 潜水 艦 , Harushio-gata Sensuikan ) was a class of seven conventional hunting submarines of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF).
General
The class, which has been in service since the late 1980s, was a larger and quieter further development of the Yūshio class and replaced the Uzushio class in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces.
The seventh boat, the Asashio , was modified to test an air-independent propulsion system (AIP). All boats were replaced by the Sōryū class from 2009 to 2017 .
