The Yūshio class ( Japanese ゆ う し お 型 , Yūshio-gata ) was a class of ten conventional hunting submarines of the Japanese Sea Self-Defense Forces (JMSDF) .

General

The class put into service between 1980 and 1989 was a further development of the Uzushio class . The two-hulled boats followed the example of the American Navy with the bow sonar and the outward angled torpedo tubes moved to a position amidships . After the commissioning of the last submarine of the subsequent Harushio class , the boats of the Yūshio class were decommissioned between 1999 and 2008 and replaced by the Oyashio class .

The Akishio (SS-579) has been on display in the JMSDF Kure Museum since 2007.
