Carlos (Carl) Conrad Grethe (born September 25, 1864 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † February 2, 1913 in Nieuwpoort , Belgium ) was a painter and academy professor.

biography

Grethe was the son of Low German parents who lived as merchants in Montevideo . From the age of five he lived in Hamburg. He did a commercial apprenticeship at a wholesale company and then as a decorative painter with a decorative painter and at the Hamburg trade school with Paul Düyffcke . He then studied from 1882 to 1884 with Theodor Poeckh , Ernst Schurth and Karl Hoff and from 1889 to 1890 at the Karlsruhe Art Academy . In between he was at the Académie Julian in Paris (1884–1886). He interrupted his studies for an eight-month sea voyage to Mexico (1888–1889); the sea voyage was to have a strong influence on his work in the maritime field.

This was followed in 1890 by teaching at the Karlsruhe School of Applied Arts and in 1891 as a professor at the academy there. In November 1893 he became professor of painting at the Karlsruhe Art School. From 1899 to 1913 (†) he taught at the Kgl. Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Here he taught at the technical painting school. From 1906 he also lived in Nieuwport in Belgium.

Grethe was a member of the Munich Secession from 1894 , and also in 1896 was involved in the founding of the Karlsruher Künstlerbund, the Stuttgarter Künstlerbund , the Kgl. Teaching and experimental workshop (1901) and the Württembergischer Kunstfreunde association.
At the turn of the century he can be classified as an important representative of his subject in the areas of man and sea as well as coast and port . Travels to the German, Danish, Swedish, Italian and Belgian coasts broadened his vision; pictures of the port of Hamburg, shipyards and shipyard workers were taken. By ships or by shrimp fishermen .

His artistic development went from modern realism at the beginning of his creative phase to more impressionistic content in his later works. He worked in oil and oil tempera as well as in gouache and watercolor.
