Paul Düyffcke
Paul Düyffcke (also Duyffcke ; * December 17, 1847 in Hamburg , † beginning of January 1910 there ) was a German painter, sculptor , medalist and draftsman.
Life
After training as a stone draftsman in Hamburg, the son of the architect CFJ Düyffcke initially worked as a lithographer in Edmund Ritter's stone drawing workshop . He then attended the art academies in Dresden, Berlin and Weimar. Leopold von Kalckreuth was one of his teachers . Düyffcke volunteered for the Franco-German War 1870-1871. He then returned to Weimar.
From 1872 to 1898, Düyffcke was a professor at the Hamburg trade school. He soon made a name for himself with his versatile work. He painted and photographed architecture and landscape pictures, portraits, self-portraits, nudes, fairy tales and animals and portrayed Hamburg's street life. He designed wall decorations and worked as a portrait medalist. He drew, worked with gouache , watercolor and oil, created figures and reliefs from bronze and marble. In 1893 he designed the honorary award of the Amateur Photographers Association. His clients included the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Ritzebüttel Office and the Hamburg Senate . Düffcke became best known for his wall decorations in the Hamburg City Hall, including a ceiling painting in the Ratskeller , which can still be viewed today.
In 1874 Düyffcke married the pianist Marie Sander. He was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 and the Society for Art and Science, and drew tickets, menus, dance cards and souvenir pictures for their events.
In October 1889, through the mediation of Mayor Carl Friedrich Petersen, he was given the honor of bringing the composer Johannes Brahms in Vienna on behalf of the Hamburg Senate the official insignia for his appointment as an honorary citizen of Hamburg. Brahms had not been able to attend the actual ceremony in the Hamburger Kunsthalle in September. The luxurious gift box also contained a gouache by Düyffcke. The insignia are now kept as part of the Brahms estate in the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna.
