Ernst Schurth

Ernst Schurth (born May 1, 1848 in Titisee-Neustadt , † June 10, 1910 in Karlsruhe ) was a German painter and professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe .

Life

Ernst Schurth was born in 1848 as the son of a painter. At the age of 16 he attended the class of antiquities at the art academy in Karlsruhe. He then moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg for three years . After a short stay at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , he moved to Dresden and worked there as a freelance artist. After these stays he took part in the Franco-German War as an infantryman . When he got home from the war, he went to Vienna for further studies . After studying for a year in Italy , he returned to Karlsruhe in 1879 and became a student of Ferdinand Keller . In 1882 he was first assistant to the painter and university professor Theodor Poeckh in the Department of Classics of Antiquities and Nature. When the department was split up, Schurth took over the class of antiquities. In 1885 he was appointed professor at the Art Academy. In 1895 the departments were merged again, after which he became the sole director of the institute.

Act

Ernst Schurth devoted himself primarily to portrait and figure painting. In his works he portrayed Kaiser Wilhelm II and his wife Auguste Viktoria, among others . Schurth also painted portraits of the Grand Duke of Baden Friedrich I. Schurth also distinguished himself for various wall paintings, u. a. in the neo-renaissance villa of the Palais Bürklin in Karlsruhe. Pictures by Schurth are exhibited in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe and in the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe .

Honors

Schurth is the namesake of Schurthplatz in Titisee-Neustadt.
